You are right

It does not much matter if you think you can or think you cannot. In either case, you are correct. When you make up your mind, your body will follow. The mother who lifted a car off her child did not stop to think that she could not do that. She simply did it. Of course it was impossible. Any logical, rational, thinking person knows this. Fortunately for the child, its mother did not stop to think that she might not be able to. She did what her mind told her had to be done. I haven’t done anything particularly amazing, but continue to be impressed by the power of the human mind, at least of mine, but I […]

Physician heal thyself

Challenge accepted. Yesterday I had an angry red blotch surrounding a scabbed-over wound, source of injury unknown. I biff and bang my skin in my everyday world without giving it much thought. This infection is not significantly different from hundreds of others I have had, and certainly of no concern. In the olden days with my blind faith in the anointed medical practitioners, I would hustle to one of their temples to get shot for the dreaded tetanus that none of us had ever known to exist outside a mythology of the diploma-bearing medicine man world. They then would have poured some toxic mixture out of a brown bottle onto the wound, applied a fifty-dollar band-aid and sent me packing. […]

upright bass / bass guitar / electric bass

I responded to a friend’s e-mail inquiry about my thoughts comparing the features of my upright bass, my acoustic bass guitar and electric basses. I am sharing an enhanced version of my reply here. I have played trombone since I was 10 years old, mostly because of my appreciation for swing, blues, jazz, big band, and concert band music. That is, creating the music more than simply listening to it, though I do plenty of both. Since it is so rare to find trombone opportunities in these woods, I decided to take up the bass. My first attempt was an electric bass with practice amp. Nope. The sound, the feel, the gaggle of gear, cables, electrical requirements all conspired […]

When your only tool is a hammer

every job looks like a nail. The old lady with dementia scratches head to toe, too often until she bleeds. The dermatologist tries every tool in his kit without success to stop the itching. Fidgeting fingers and inability to sit still are known effects of dementia. The cause may be in her head, but dermatologists don’t work inside heads. We will give the psychiatrist a shot. I am reminded of AMA doctors. Modern MD training focuses on drugs and interactions thereof. Diet, behavior … nada … Skewz me. They matter, probably more than your lovely pharmaceuticals do. “You have gout. Have this prescription filled.” I fill the prescription, but look it up on the Internet before taking the drug. SMOKES!!! […]

herbal remedies

The 55 Best Herbal Remedies Best Herbal Remedies Not long ago, American herbalists had to rely on folklore and anecdote. There was little clinical data on herbs, and what did exist was mostly published in German. But researchers (and translators) have been busy of late, and we now have proof that herbs are viable treatments for many ailments. “Herbs won’t replace pharmaceuticals, but the research shows that–for many conditions–herbs work well, are cheaper than drugs and cause fewer side effects,” says Mary Hardy, M.D., medical director of the integrative medicine program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. “Herbs aren’t quite mainstream, but they’re moving in that direction. Patients are interested in them, and doctors are increasingly familiar with […]
