sadness in the community band

I have enjoyed playing trombone in The Bitterroot Community Band every summer since June of 2013. It is glorious to make music together with a large ensemble. Better still our shared enjoyment makes for good friendships. Sadly, fear of the psy-op shut down the entire 2020 season. This year the volunteers who organize and operate the band appended this to the schedule of practices and concerts they sent to bandsmen. from Bitterroot Band: Covid- 19 Information According to current CDC guidelines, anyone that is vaccinated is no longer required to wear a mask in public. If you would like a mask or bell cover for rehearsals / performances, please let us know. If you are feeling ill, or were […]

Gary Owen by Bitterroot Community Band

This chart in my music folder caught my eye. I’m playing the euphonium book on my slide trombone. The parts that are intended for a 3 or 4 valve instrument are more challenging on a slide, but they have some very interesting licks. Gary Owen is A CONSTANT RUSH of notes, but a heckuva lotta fun … even if I only come close to getting them all right. Mid season we had a euphonium player join in the fun. I did not let that move me away from this particular part. Besides, between the two of us each missing some of the licks, together we got ’em all. Or so. Gary Owen March from Ted Dunlap on Vimeo. Bitterroot Community Band videos

Here are videos taken from our July 25th Daly Mansion gig. The canopy of trees overhead does not reflect and focus our sound like a real bandshell, but it came out fine… probably better live than with a compact camera on video mode. I, on the other hand, never get past the back row while we are playing. Thus this is as close as I can come to hearing our music from the front and thank my wife for shooting us. 😉 – – – – – – The musicians involved fondly call this “The summer sight-reading program”. We practice a generous fistfull of charts on Tuesday, then play them later in the week for an audience. Next week we […]

Bitterroot Community Band remaining summer schedule

There are a few opportunities left to catch this band before they close down for the winter … okay, more accurately, the non-summer season. We play while public schools are not in session. That is because a significant number of our musicians as well as the director are music teachers during the school year. Thus we only run our “summer sight reading program” during the non-school period. Everybody is welcome. Thus the skill levels vary a bit, but I happened in front of the band while it was practicing Tuesday and it sounded sharp! In the trombone section at the back of the band I rarely get the big picture. But it is good. The reviews are good. The price […]

Bitterroot Community Band

— This is a summer-series concert band open to anyone who wants to play their band instruments. We play high school level charts at various free-to-the-public gigs around the Bitterroot. — I encourage you to print a schedule out for your bulletin board and another one or two for public bulletin boards. 2019 Summer Schedule .pdf

Bitterroot Community Band

Thursday was our final Hamilton Band Shell performance of the 2018 season. We play together once more this year at the Ravalli County Fair Saturday September 1st at 3:00pm. We don’t know the composition of the band until the director strikes the downbeat. Last week was a record for the low brass section … not quite 76 trombones, but closer than I have ever seen us to it. Missy shot some videos of our tunes until the battery in my camera insisted she quit… part-way through the fourth song. My Canon point-n-shoot does not bill itself as a movie camera, and certainly has a low-end microphone, but you can get the gist of what we were up to last Thursday. […]

Bitterroot Community Band at Daly Mansion 8/8

I am MOST EXCITED about tomorrow’s performance. It has several great things going for it. Bitterroot Community Band Thursday, August 8th, 7:00pm Daly Mansion, Hamilton Far and away my most favorite is the virtuoso bass trombone performance Chris Porter is putting on playing “Barnicle Bill The Sailor”. By the time I turned 9 years old, I was convinced there was no finer sound than trombone. I could play nothing less. My opinion is little changed. While I enjoy and appreciate the high notes, I love the middle and go a-ga-ga over the low ones. Chris hits them all and stacks them together in a way that place him in a very high league indeed. Knowing what I know of trombone, […]

Bitterroot Community Band

This is a great, fun group of musicians including high school kids, retired folks and every age in between. We get together throughout the public school summer vacations and share the joy of making music. Our rehersals are in the Stevensville high school band room most Tuesday evenings. Every week or two, we also share the opportunity to listen in numerous venues around the Bitterroot Valley. The band has a facebook page, for those who go there: Bitterroot Community Band Our remaining performance schedule is: Saturday, August 3: Lewis & Clark Park, Stevensville, 1:00pm Thursday, August 8: Daly Mansion, Hamilton, 7:00pm Tuesday, August 13: Hamilton Legion Park, 12-noon Thursday, August 22: Hamilton Bandshell, 8:00pm Saturday, August 31: Ravalli County Fair, […]

Bitterroot Community Band

I was pleased with much about my first experience with the Bitterroot Community Band. Evening practices 45 miles away are off-putting, but sharing time with an all-ages band who play well together makes up for that – and more. Plus, the miles are absolutely beautiful. People spend their vacations trying to find scenery like this. Oh yeah, back to the band. They unquestionably welcome all musicians of all ages. It attracts the better music students who wish to keep their skills up during summer vacation from school, along with half a dozen music teachers who, except for the director/conductor, get to play an instrument for a change. Also in there are recent high school and college graduates now finding this […]

community service

When we consider community service, we think of people who do volunteer work at the public library, in a thrift store or a soup kitchen. There is, however, a category even less common, but probably much more important. Introducing Kurt Askim … Soon after graduation, he met his future wife of 63 years, Jonna Willette who was also attending San Rafael High School. They were married in July 1950 and had two daughters Jeffri and Lisa. In 1950 he graduated from San Francisco State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Soon after graduating he served in the US Army from 1950-1953, and rose from the rank of 2nd Lieutenant to Captain. From 1953 to 1962 he served in the […]

personal and community emergency planning

I am going to clip and link several articles that I found enlightening, thoughful and worth the visit. As sometimes happens here, I have been sitting on these links trying to build them into articles of my own. Today I stop sitting on them … or as referenced in my prior post, I got my Round Tuit. A Practical Approach To A Neighborhood Defense Plan by Noell Bishop … Lets start this by identifying what the possible threats are that would lend us to need a Neighborhood Defense plan. Keep in mind, one threat or one event can lead to other threats or events. With North Korea and Iran still in the nuclear game, I feel that an Electromagnetic Pulse […]

It Is Time To Abandon Social Media

by Brett Stevens  You may have noticed the removal of most social media icons from the top of our page. This reflects a new strategy: social media is dominated by Leftists, so we who are not Leftist should remove ourselves, so that social media has to reveal its actual bias instead of claiming to be a public space. American law has gotten around to classifying some privately-owned spaces as public for the purpose of speech rights, but has not yet extended this to virtual town halls like private media has become. Social media is abusing this. These companies act this way for a simple reason. Their business model is failing. As it turns out, internet advertising is not all that profitable. We […]

Bitterroot Blues Band

Blues begat country. Rock came from blues. Swing, Dixieland and jazz also evolved from the blues. Blues is a familiar form of music to most of us, even if we don’t know it. The best part of music is making it; playing your own instrument. That is what we will be doing Saturday evenings this semester thanks to the Darby Adult Education program. Our foundation will be the blues, but we will drift into one or more of its offspring depending on desires of the participating musicians. Community‎ > ‎Adult Ed‎ > Course Calendar We are excited to announce our Course Calendar! Please read below for course descriptions. You can register online TODAY. Course Registration Deadline is Friday, January 26th. […]

community preparedness teams

It is foolhardy for people to think they will survive a major upheaval alone, with their immediate family, by retreating to a cave in the woods or other macho-man ideas I have heard voiced. We aren’t mountain lions in a place where game is plentiful for our population. Realistically, we humans need a huge variety of specializations, strengths and personalities that come from a fairly large tribe … not to mention significant genetic diversity for long-term survival of our offspring. Any plan that does not take survival of the community into account falls short of good by a wide margin. I have mixed feelings about the Oath Keepers group, but for the most part very positive. They get A LOT […]
