Global Skywatch

Can’t shoot the messenger?

Pick a random target and shoot them. Or maybe the target is not so random… I don’t figure I need to put up links. Ya’all know the leaked e-mails exposed the Clintons, the DNC, Obama, the Clinton Foundation and many top level officials for corruption, election rigging, pedophilia, a trail of lies, bribes, bombs and dead bodies. Real media, real investigative journalism would have these people and these stories laid bare before an outraged populace. But the presstitutes are lockstep hammering “the Russians” for hacking the Clinton’s illegal computer system that the secretary of state used instead of the computer system belonging to the US State Department that she was required to use (felony, treason). Evidence of this Russian hack: […]

sled dog racing

The 10th Annual Darby Dog Derby will take place January 14th & 15th, 2017 at Lost Trail Pass at Gibbons Pass Road. The Bitterroot Mushers club created this exciting, fun event. Go to their website for more information. Pay particular attention to the spectator information. The energy of nearly 100 high-performance, high-strung dogs is impressive. Be there for the start of the first races, on through the last. It is a sight, and moreso, a sound you won’t forget. This is my fourth time leading a team of radio operators to provide communications up and down the mountains. This is a perfect example of amateur radio serving where nothing else will do. We are pleased to add a measure of […]

oh-bomb-uh

While nobody is perfect, particularly inhabitants of the Potomac swamp, but Ron Paul is far and away the best elected national representative of my lifetime. Ron’s summary here of ‘the obama legacy’ nails a big piece of it. Left out is the job ohbummer did making our culture more divisive, distrusting and violent against each other. It is ironic that the puppet they chose to oversee that transition was a gay, black Kenyan. They do love their little jokes. He has also continued progress on arming the palace guard and increasing their apartness from we the people. (see Bitterroot Bugle post category: police state) With a fortnight to go in this administration, we probably have more tanks, planes, bombs […]

absolute not

You probably thought I meant to write “absolutely not”. Nope. We like to think there are more absolutes in our world than really exist. We are particularly easy to suck in when unusual, distinct numbers or those with decimal places are thrown in. 96.7% of statistics are made up on the spot That sounds much more researched and nuanced than “More often than not …”. People talk and write about the weather a lot (72.3% of conversations include such discussions 😉 ). This is particularly a hot topic when we are in the midst of a record cold snap, such as now. It stands the hair on the back of my scientific neck on end when they all assume their […]

up your comms

I have spent the last half-dozen years improving my ability to support community communications. Well, more accurately, I spent a tiny fraction of my time and brain power learning 2-way radio … As I do with nearly everything else in my life: Jack of all trades; master of none. This morning I was guided to an excellent overview article with links covering what SOMEONE in every community needs to know before we can consider comms covered. Crumb! I have a long ways to go, yet I want it all NOW. That leaves me three choices: 1) Get cracking; focus on my radio studies and applications 2) Recruit, encourage and support a real radio operator in our area 3) Lower my […]

dam breaks

Lots of deep cold, plenty of snow, followed by some warm, throw in some precipitation and you have a recipe for ice dams breaking. That, of course includes the possibility of flooding. We are coming up on that exact situation during the next week. Last month I recorded the first event like that I have witnessed in several winters here. Amazingly I was inspired to take a short video clip of The Bitterroot freezing over in our front yard on December 9th. Okay, by itself, that event isn’t amazing, but what I recorded the very next day is what provides the real value. Missy says, “Ted, LOOK AT THE RIVER.” Where there was solid ice around 3′ above the river […]

community preparedness teams

It is foolhardy for people to think they will survive a major upheaval alone, with their immediate family, by retreating to a cave in the woods or other macho-man ideas I have heard voiced. We aren’t mountain lions in a place where game is plentiful for our population. Realistically, we humans need a huge variety of specializations, strengths and personalities that come from a fairly large tribe … not to mention significant genetic diversity for long-term survival of our offspring. Any plan that does not take survival of the community into account falls short of good by a wide margin. I have mixed feelings about the Oath Keepers group, but for the most part very positive. They get A LOT […]

midnight prowler

At 0030 last night Beagle Brain went off as if the zombie apocalypse had begun at our door. In a flash I had my robe on and was in the front room. The motion-detector flood lights were on, but everywhere I looked was vacant of mammalian beings… or anything at all visible but the snow, river and trees that normally occupy our riverside yard. Yet Beagle Brain was barking at extreme pitch, far more so than the normal ‘won’t shut up cuz there is a deer walking in the woods’. I continue investigating, then see a flash of a man walking by our front window! Briskly. I dash to the side window to catch a retreating view… big parka, fur-faced […]

a bit cold here

This morning I woke up to discover our home (including the East Fork of The Bitterroot River) had been moved into North Dakota. I don’t know how it was done, but one look at the thermometer told me it was so. After the sun was up for a while, I thought to open the window and take a photo of the thermometer outside my studio. It was approximately three tick-marks below the lowest one on the C scale (left) side before the sun started heating the place up. I estimate that would be -28 or -29 Centigrade or as you young’uns like to write, Celsius … down by the East Fork of The Bitterroot River. That comes out to -20 […]

the right people lost

Yesterday, my Al-Gore-style-environmentalist acolyte daughter asked me if I was a Trump fan. She was relieved by my answer… until I said I was at least pleased that his victory over the other leading choice at least moved us further from nuclear WWIII. She felt the opposite was true. The knowledge gap is too great to be leapt with a single bound. I learned long ago that my family members living in la-la-land are surrounded by, immersed in a sea of humanity, all hearing the same voices in their heads. You know the voices, the ones mainstream media incessantly drone on their FCC-licensed monopoly airwaves. Elite Californians are not only ignorant of the other side, they feel quite superior in […]

Weekend of a Champion

Last night we enjoyed a 2013 movie, most of which was made by Roman Polanski during three days he spent with Jackie Stewart in 1971, leading up to and including Jackie’s drive in the Monaco Grand Prix. Ya’all ought to know I am A CAR GUY. I have been a dedicated car guy, and in particular, road-racing car guy since I was five years old, or so. Anything that involves high-performance driving turning right as well as left has my interest. I subscribed to Road & Track and Car & Driver in the 70’s, watching Jackie via those pages during his peak. I also found autocross and began legitimate sports car performance competition about that time. I differentiate that from […]

phaith in pharma

While it might be a happy place for the masses, I am not as trusting of those at the top of the Federal-Reserve-Note food chain. In most cases, scratch the surface to find the rich and powerful left trails of bodies in their wakes. I am amazed and disappointed by the blind faith intelligent people use as their guide. I really don’t feel I was genetically given extraordinary intelligence, but the masses are oblivious to cultural-political components that are obvious to me. I occasionally struggle to comprehend what strikes me as deliberate action to choose worshiping evil over rejecting it. The trusting lambs seem smart enough in many ways, yet march right onto the killing floor to the soothing […]

economics: university VS real world

Keynesian Economics was invented by John Maynard Keynes a century ago. It is a theory that claims political leaders can spend money far beyond what the economy produces and bankers can print money far beyond assets they have to back their loans … and that it is good for all of us. The banks love it because printing lots of money makes them incredibly rich. Country leaders love it because it says they can buy votes, pass out favors and live like royalty for the rest of their lives. Keynesian Economics is the theory taught in colleges and universities because it justifies the world that the leaders want to live in. It is what I learned at Sonoma State University. […]

Darby Adult Education

I am again offering to teach two-way radio communications to my neighbors in the Darby area. I have formatted the classes differently, and added significantly to the offerings. There is a sequence to these classes, from easiest to acquire to more challenging. The first class is strictly about GMRS radios. This license has no training, knowledge or testing requirement. You send 70 bucks to the FCC and get their permission for your whole family to use the frequencies for the next 5 years. The class I am offering for these only takes 2 hours out of a Saturday mid-morning. I encourage the whole family to sign up and come get started. GMRS radios can be powerful tools for Bitterrooters. Next […]
