shifting the free press into neutral

In what one Republican called a “monumental shift toward government control of the Internet,” the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday approved a proposal granting the federal government the authority to regulate Internet broadband providers under the same law as public utilities.

Five commissioners voted 3-2 along party lines in favor of the proposal known as net neutrality. The 332-page plan has not yet been publicly released.

“Net neutrality is a solution that won’t work to a problem that doesn’t exist”
– Ajit Pai (a dissenting FCC Commissioner).

Commissioner Pai said it was “sad to witness” the FCC replacing Internet freedom with “government control.”

Commissioner Michael O’Reilly criticized the proposal to reverse Title II: “I see no need for net neutrality rules. I am far more troubled the commission is charting for Title II.” He continued, calling the move a “monumental and unlawful power grab.”

“The Ford Foundation and Open Society Foundation, founded by George Soros, have given more than $196 million to pro-net neutrality groups between 2000 and 2013,” said the report, authored by Media Research Center’s Joseph Rossell

Republican Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell warned Tuesday that the new “Net Neutrality” rules would be used by President Barack Obama to take over the Internet.

“The Obama Administration, which has already nationalized health care, the auto industry, insurance companies, banks and student loans, will move forward with what could be a first step in controlling how Americans use the Internet by establishing federal regulations on its use,” he said.
